The madness driving random killers


Last March 25, Kuniaki Kariya, a 38-year-old government official, was suddenly shoved into the path of an approaching train while standing on the platform at JR Okayama Station. He died of injuries several hours later. "Youth A," Kariya's 18-year-old assailant — his name remains withheld because he is still a minor — later told interrogators, "I could have attacked anyone. I just wanted to go to prison."
